Description
Achinós is the sea urchin of the Ionian coast below our mountains, and the first shape we tried when we began forging for the table instead of the door. A single bar of iron is brought to orange heat, bent into a ring and closed, then struck rib by rib around its circumference until the surface reads like a shell. The cup at the centre is sunk last, by hand, so each one is a little different in depth and in the way the light pools.
It holds a standard tealight flush with the rim, or an 80 mm ball candle sitting in the cup like a moon on a crown. Unlit, it is a small sculpture; lit, the ribs throw a wheel of shadow across the table.
The finish is the iron’s own: scale, hammer marks and a protective wax. It will darken and polish where it is handled, which is what iron does.
