Description
Kýma is the wave. Where Achinós is all ribs and edges, this piece is made by taking the edges away: the iron is heated, folded on itself and planished with a flat hammer for hours until the surface flows. The fold that becomes the lip is set while the metal is still soft, so it curls differently on each one — higher, lower, a little more to one side.
A tealight sits in the hollow with the fold rising behind it like a shield, which also happens to keep the flame steady in a draught. With a ball candle the whole object reads as a stone holding an egg of light.
Iron finished this way is almost silver when it leaves the forge and warms to a deeper grey with time and touch. It is waxed, not lacquered; a soft cloth is all it will ever need.
